Nicole Malliotakis Adds US Treasuries to Her Portfolio

Nicole Malliotakis, representing New York’s 11th congressional district in the House of Representatives for the Republicans, recently disclosed a large purchase of $100,000 - $250,000 of US Treasury bills, on February 6, 2023. This purchase came alongside a smaller purchase of Verizon Communications Inc (VZ:US) of $1,000 - $15,000.

These purchases are notable as both are defensive purchases with high yields. US Treasury Bills are often a place for investors to protect their assets and collect a yield while they wait until the maturity of the asset. Given that yields have spiked in the last couple of years, this could be Rep. Malliotakis taking advantage of the higher coupon payments than in the last 5 years has been available. Verizon Communications, as well, pays a higher dividend yield of over 6.5%, although the stock is down in the last year over 24%. 

This purchase comes at a time when her fellow House of Representatives member Max Miller, the Republican from Ohio, sold a large amount of US Treasury bills back on January 17, 2023, with two sale trades of between $100,000 - $250,000. It will remain to be seen who comes out ahead in this trade. Much will depend on future inflation expectations as well as the Federal Reserve’s actions taken to combat said inflation.
